Christmas Eve Colours!

Red and Green! What a combination!

What is your first thought on seeing this particular combination of colours? I’d be very surprised if the answer was anything but ‘Christmas’. I’d also be very surprised if this colour combination was worn much outside the festive season. Because these colours are so hard-wired into our brains as Christmas, that anyone wearing them not at Christmas might be viewed as an out-of-season elf.

The green symbolises the trees we bring into our houses and the wreaths we hang on the door. It is our connection to the pagan festival of the winter solstice which the Christian religion adopted. It is our connection to nature, the bringing of the wild green from outside, inside. And the red is the fire of the hearth, the warmth of the celebrations and of course the clothing of a central figure. (My daughter recently pointed out to me as we were watching our countdown of Christmas films, how much red was in every scene. And she was right.)

Add to this the fact that red and green are complementary colours, meaning they are opposite one another on the colour wheel. As a result they visually sizzle when put together.

Christmas seems to be the time to wear red. I once had my colours done by a shaman (nothing done by halves, me!) and she told me that anyone could wear red it just had to be the right shade. My shade is a blue red. Put me in a yellow red and I look distinctly unfestive(!)

Is there a colour you will be wearing this Christmas?

Happy Christmas Eve to you all!

May your Christmas be full of colour!

  1. I’ll probably be wearing pyjamas! As for the colour, it depends if there are any new ones under the tree πŸ™‚ I always remember my art teacher telling me about red and green being opposites and saying that was why there were often green monsters in horror films as it contrasted with the blood!

  2. Merry Christmas! I love Christmas colours, the colours of holly. Think it’ll be leggings and a jumper for me on the day (Elasticated waist and good for a walk!) – probably blue. Love the idea of having colours done by a shaman and can see that blue based red is good for you. I’ve always steered clear of red for fear it clashes with my hair except when it comes to lipstick, which will be festively red tomorrow!

  4. Happy Christmas to you, too! Well, not a speck of red, I’m afraid – started in blue swimming shorts, moved on to blue shirt with blue shorts… Boring, I know, but it kept me in the flow for the day. πŸ™‚
